Scalp Concerns: 5 Tips For Oily Scalps This Fall

Having an oily scalp may bother you every once in a while but you might think...

"If I just shampoo more often, that should take care of it, right?!" Maybe or maybe that is just a bandaid fix.

By diving deeper into scalp health, I am able to see more clearly why just shampooing more often isn't always the answer.

I too, suffer from an overly oily scalp, it has driven me crazy for years but not something I really had time to look into.

Throughout my pivot in the hair industry, my passion for hair has aligned with a passion for holistic health and wellness. Learn along with me and we can debunk what causes an oily scalp!

Tip #1 - Scalp Oils Eliminate Excessive Natural Oils

Your scalp creates natural oils, that's how your scalp and hair stay moisturized. But what happens when it’s too much and it creates greasy hair?!

Washing your hair is great but water and oil DO NOT MIX. So the water is just going to sit on your scalp instead of washing the oils away.

That's when Scalp Oils come into play....

🌿 Scalp oils will attach themselves to your natural oils and help them disappear. My favorite scalp oils are Hui Hui Essential's Scalp Rescue.

With Scalp Rescue, the oils are non- comedogenic, which means that they absorb into your scalp and don't just sit there.

The herbal ingredients are beneficial for your scalp, hair and even your health because they are all natural and non toxic. Which lead us to…

Tip #2 - Switch Up Your Hair Care To Non Toxic

In the beauty industry, the products are not regulated like our food is. Even though they are still being absorbed into our bodies. Since there is no regulation, anything can be put in those little bottles and not many people have time to research the terminology on the ingredient list.

In some of my research, I have found…

allergens

irritants

pollutants

and even…

endocrine disruptors

in many popular hair care brands. Of course those same hair care products could also be causing greasy and oily scalps.

But don't worry, you don't have to research (unless you want to) I have started using non toxic brands at Lively Hair Studio to take all the guess work out.

Let me ask you something...

If you want to reset your scalp to reduce oils, why would you put products on your hair that have additives in them that could be causing the problem in the first place?!

The best way to avoid that is to…

Tip #3 - Create An Attractive Shampoo Routine

I get it, doing your hair can sometimes feel like a lot. Especially having to switch things up and try new things that you don't necessarily know will work for you.

Let me let you in on a little secret…

I'm the same way 🫢

Trying something new is hard and there is always something more to buy. But I can tell you, that when I started to create a shampoo routine that felt like self care, it really helped while juggling all 3 of my kids and their routines.

Shortly after my first scalp courses, I started to take an interest in my own oily scalp. I purchased my own Scalp Rescue and really loved the calming aromatherapy it provided.

I now look forward to oiling my scalp before every shampoo because it calms me down and takes me to a place that isn’t my chaotic mom brain.

Now granted, I have 2 toddlers so my shampooing days are down to 2 days a week but I look forward to them all the time!

Tip #4 - Shampoo Twice

Shampooing twice is essential to elimate greasy oils. By shampooing only once, the shampoo usually doesn’t absorb enough. For best results, shampoo twice and don’t forget to completely saturate your hair with water.

The second shampoo is to really deep clean your scalp. This is incredibly important if you have thick and/ or curly hair.

To help with your shampoo and to make it fun…

use a scalp massager 🌿

You can find one easily on Amazon, it feels good and helps distribute the shampoo along your scalp.

In your first shampoo, you can…

Tip #5 - Add A Scalp Exfoliator

After learning how the oils helped my scalp and my mental health, my next step included adding Innersense True Enlightenment Scalp Scrub to my shampoo.

🌿 This scalp exfoliator deeply cleans and has a cooling sensation which is incredibly refreshing. With that combination, my scalp is now naturally balanced without being irritated or itchy.
